When I say I'm a feminist, I want to be very clear that this is not what I mean https://twitter.com/baddestmamajama/status/1234226726449766400 …

I believe in equality. It’s because of people like this, but mostly much worse than this, that I won’t identify with feminism.

I mean look, judge any movement by its loudest assholes and you're gonna leave with a bad taste in your mouth I think sexist ideas are baked into our society on a really basic level in ways that harm both men and women, which is why I consider myself a feminist

I think sexist ideas are baked into our society on a basic level as well. And I think that harms both men and women. Which is exactly why I won’t identify around a movement that implicitly believes in the advancement of one gender. And is opposed to movements for men’s rights.

All the best men's rights stuff I've seen has come from feminists. So-called MRAs seem to just whine about how shit feminists are, I don't see a lot of solutions or push for equality from that corner. Feminists talk about the concrete ways that sexism hurts men

This has not been my experience. Have you seen @Cassie_Jaye ‘s The Red Pill? There are toxic MRA’s who simply hate feminism. But in practice women’s groups don’t fight for paternity rights or equity in low level jobs. And even academics will blame men for their problems.

Takedowns of TRP like this one make me hesitant to invest time and energy watching it: https://youtu.be/xDI4F7eWu7k  I'll make a deal with you: show me one substantive thing men's rights activists have done for men in the real world and I'll watch it. Cross my heart

Most domestic violence shelters turn away men despite men being victims of domestic violence as well. Groups who care about men’s rights open up shelters for them:https://www.npr.org/2017/07/15/537381161/more-domestic-violence-shelters-for-men-opening …

But I should clarify: I do not consider myself an MRA and I don’t prefer men’s rights to women’s rights. What I mean to say is, feminist groups and academics can be quite adversarial to issues men face despite claiming the opposite.

Some are. More aren't. "Feminism" is am ENORMOUS tent, there are some assholes in there for sure. But feminists are the ones doing the work to tear down structures that advocate things like 'real men don't experience DV' and 'only men should be sent to war' and 'boys don't cry'

There's an entire industry that revolves around finding the worst feminists and sharing their shit opinions with the world for outraged clicks and it's just not the whole story

I would agreed with you, but again there are examples of feminist leaders and academics in the movie saying the exact opposite and treating it as a zero-sum game. Yes, Big Red makes an appearance, but the most offensive statements come from a USC professor in gender studies.

I think the problem is inherent in the ideology. That it’s *the advancement of women’s interests* to promote equality. There’s nothing wrong with advancing women’s interests, but it’s not the same as pushing for equality across the board. We shouldn’t pretend that it is.
