I confess, I didn’t watch the debates. I watched a bootlegged hour of the first debate, and listened to recaps of the second. Here are my thoughts: not on the debate itself, but on the format. 1) CNN’s lead-in and commentary on the debates remind me of watching UFC

2) 1 minute questions, 15 second rebuttals: we should have just had the debate on Twitter. 4 hours of futile 1.5 second explorations of America’s thorniest issues, and all the interruptions you’d expect with this format. No one can say anything real in 15 seconds, just soundbites

3) I can find a million highlight videos and reports and 0 full videos of the debate. I’m lazy, but that’s not the point. CNN has made it Very Hard to watch the actual debate and Very Easy to watch their cherry-picked soundbite analysis of the debate.

This was never about learning more about the candidates, it’s about generating enough 15-second soundbites to craft whatever narrative you want. This is not what good democracy looks like, but it’s probably what good ratings look like.

There are no direct free-market incentives to prioritize long-term civic health. Our whole system is fucked, and it’s getting fuckeder every day. A 2020 Dem victory can’t save us from that
