Why don’t the vast majority of people give a damn that most children read below grade level and most K-12 teachers don’t know how to teach reading? #LiteracyIsEquity #ScienceofReading @McNamee54 @WilliamJBennett @ehanford @drheidibc @drheidi2007 @janhasbrouck @FaithBorkowsky

And let's be clear...those teachers who "don't know how to teach reading" haven't been taught that information! Many teachers have worked hard to learn this information and have been repeatedly and utterly failed by their colleges/universities or by the PD offerings in schools.

In a teacher mtg once I was asked to talk about literacy in every subject. The math teachers complained saying they don't ask us to teach math blah blah. I said. Well as long as you have word problems and directions you need to understand how lack of literacy affects students.

If it doesn’t affect them, it’s of little import. If it doesn’t move the leaders of those affected, even less. If it doesn’t concern the media to decry it, even less. And if there are powerful interests who will fight doing anything about it, it becomes untouchable as an issue.

I’m ok with kids learning to read when *they* are ready. However, As far as the latter: public schools are bastions of mediocrity. Teachers are not chosen nor recognized for their superb teaching knowledge & ability.

Because no one wants to admit that we are breeding teachers who do not know how to teach reading .. they would rather pretend the problem does not exist …

It gets worse. I’ve met _teachers_ who CANNOT read (or not accurately, or just some words they’d memorized). All of them, of course, THOUGHT they could read. It’s gruesome to see them point, word by word, at (e.g.) “Back to School’ while “reading” it aloud as “Welcome Back.”

Partly because the system hasn’t admitted to these problems or proposed solutions. Instead it trumpets successes of Debate Teams, Teacher-Of-The-Year, and athletic championships. Not to mention PTA Bake Sales. All so vital to children’s futures.

At some point, other parents have to stop sitting around waiting and do their jobs at home help teach their children how to sound out words & read. There are those who do just that, in addition to investing in Learning Software & gadgets. Everything should'nt come from school.
