"In 2008, I was a field organizer for President Barack Obama in Virginia...it was illuminating because you're directly able to engage with voters," she says. "It felt more tangible than 2016, where I was working in the Brooklyn headquarters for Hillary Clinton."

"The experiences were both rewarding, but very, very different," she adds.

"Democrats seem to be working off an old idea about who the base of the Democratic party is," @ZerlinaMaxwell. But she says that hasn't been true for many, many election cycles.

"Post-2016, the demonization of identity politics failed to realize that we had been playing identity politics all along," @ZerlinaMaxwell says.

"Black and brown women are the base of our party," she says.

"Too often on both sides of the aisle..there's a white male majority consulting class, and that needs to be upended a bit," @ZerlinaMaxwell says. "I want more Black and brown people to see campaigns as a job."
