We're live, talking about why Washington, D.C. is not a state.
@ProfSchleich, @gdmusgrove and @Curious_Kurz are with us.https://wamu.fm/3ieStdW

"You might think that because Congress meets in D.C., the residents have a say over what happens in Congress,"
@curious_kurz says. "That's largely not true."Show this thread -
"Race played a huge role in the District first losing any type of local government [in the 1870s during Reconstruction],"
@gdmusgrove says. "The basic argument is if we bring back the vote, Black people will have access to the franchise and dominate the city."Show this thread -
@EleanorNorton is with us now. "I can chair a subcommittee. I vote in committee. I do everything that every representative does. But when it comes time to cast that final vote, including votes that affect only the District, every member of the House can vote except [me]."Show this thread -
"I think statehood is a good idea, but proponents need to think really hard about how to shape statehood,"
@ProfSchleich says. He argues that statehood would not only impact representation in the House, but would fundamentally change how D.C. is governed.Show this thread -
.
@EleanorNorton responds to a listeners' concern that statehood is a "Democratic power grab." "That's the fear, and I can understand that fear," she says. "The country has to ask itself, is admission to the union dependent upon the politics of those who seek admission?"Show this thread

I think DC should be a state. They now vote for president, but people there are US citizens, so should have people in congress.
