The physical effects of Covid on the brain, causing in some cases swelling, mental confusion, brain fog, are documented and for some, long lasting. It can also cause emotional alterations similar to a stroke victim. In this sense, it does attack the mind directly.
Though COVID-19 doesn't attack the mind directly, the pandemic the virus has caused has been devastating to mental health, and in many cases, the most vulnerable group is women.
