The analogy I use is how I heard people discourage mixed-race and same-sex relationships when I was a kid. "We WANT to support you, but some other people won't, so we won't. But we're the cool kind of unsupportive...somehow."

This is the codependent experience. Out of fear of what an addict will likely do we change our lives to mitigate the impact of their actions. Out of fear of what our racist, misogynistic opponents will do we picked an old white guy. We need to recover and never do this again.

“Electability” means the status quo and for now, that absolutely means an old, white, cisgender and heterosexual male. It will be interesting to see what happens if/when something else fills that space.
