I agree with Martin.
The genesis of his faith was from the Covenant of Grace as opposed to the Covenant of Circumcision and it was on this basis that his offspring of faith were his offspring - as those who shared the faith that he had.

I never said that the promise of salvation was not a covenant to him - if a covenant of grace is defined as a stipulated promise followed by a restipulation of faith then yes, he was a member of the Covenant of Grace and he was so in a way different from all that came after him.
-
That was not the point of my tweet though. Do you not agree? If so, why do you not agree?

Sorry, I was not clear regarding the link. I was disagreeing with Coxe that Gen 12 was a CoG promise, distinct from the CoC promises mentioned later. You seem to be building on Coxe's argument regarding the timing of the CoC vs the Gen 12 promise.

Yet I didn’t quote Genesis 12. I quoted Genesis 15:5-6 “5 And he brought him outside and said, "Look toward heaven, and number the stars, if you are able to number them." Then he said to him, "So shall your offspring be."
-
6 And he believed the LORD, and he counted it to him as righteousness.“ - do you believe that this is the CoC?
-
Even if you look at Genesis 12, it stipulates that “in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed." - Genesis 12:3 - is this the CoC? I can see how it could be seen that way if you are saying that refers to Christ - is that what you are arguing for?
-
Yes, both of those are CoC promises.
-
Interesting. So would you differentiate any of the promises from Genesis 12 / 15 / 17? If so, what is your hermeneutical methodology for differentiating? Also, what would you say is the promise revealed from the CoG? Is it distinct from CoC promises & if so, how?

Thanks. I still agree with Martin FWIW. The promise of a numerous seed was a promise of the CoC, fulfilled in Israel (Gen 12:2; 13:16; 15:5; 22:17; 32:12; Ex 32:13; Num 23:10; Deut 1:10; 10:22; 1 Kg 3:8; 4:20; Is. 10:22; Heb 11:12).
