Actually I meant that debt would add to our national debt, and they would have no debt.

No, as in, it's US policy that caused Puerto Rico to take on whatever debt they have, so if they chose to leave, that debt is on us.
If it goes that way. First, they have to get a vote that includes independence as an option. As I understand it, the last self-determination vote was simply "state or nah?"
And they voted state; yet here we are two years later...
