When did Kiev become Kyiv?

It’s always been Kyiv in Ukrainian (as opposed to the Russian) and transliterated as such since independence officially but only in the last like five-ten years (especially after the Crimea thing) did western media decide to defer to the Ukrainian.

I only just started noticing that we’re doing that with Odesa now (which has an extra S in Russian)

All the cool kids are saying "Ки́їв" 😁
But at least we'll always have the Chicken...
Seriously, long, complicated history; there's a whole etymology on Wikipedia, and then a separate article just on the name itself. OED switched over to Kyiv in 2018.
