Unfortunately I won’t be able to attend the BAFTAs tonight as I wasn’t invited and don’t have anything to do with it.

Windows nerds: what’s your go-to software for a new PC? Things like VLC etc. I’ve been using a Mac for about 10 years and switched to Windows yesterday. What’s your go-to PDF reader, music player etc? Is WinAmp still a thing? Does iTunes work well in Win yet? Gimme your tips pls.

I’m currently showing my 2008 video, Big Ideas (don’t get any), in Musée royal de Mariemont in Belgium. Pop in if you’re in the area, the building looks amazing.

Until recently, the AMD Threadripper was the holy grail of processors. Then they introduced the Ryzen x3950 which is much lower cost, needs cheaper components to run and is faster at a lot of what I’d be using it for (Adobe After Effects) A game-changer.

Updates: I reckon the performance of NVME isn’t THAT much better than using SSDs, I’d like to see benchmarks for NVME drive AE Cache files but until then NVME has low priority in my build. I’d rather spend the cash on RAM upgrades. has been a great reference.

So I’m building my first Win machine in about 20yr! Exciting times. It’ll be based around an X570 motherboard and will hopefully pack a comparable performance to a high-end Mac but without the ridiculous price tag. Learning about NVME drives.

New project: Close personal friend upgraded his computer recently and has kindly donated his old parts to a computer I’m building. My Mac is nearly a decade old and can’t run the latest version of After Effects. This is embarrassing for a graphics hotshot like myself.

I've found out the paper boards I'm referring to are called demo boards, or demonstration boards. Does anyone know of a demo board from 1968 or earlier that has the exact pieces pictured? Thanks. Or any naming conventions for the design of 2D paper chess icons?

I could trace the image I managed to salvage from the film-scan (attached) but this project has been on the backburner for so long, I bet I could find original drawings of the pieces pictured. What do you call these paper tournament spectator boards? Can any pros help?

I'm convinced Trumbull photographed one of the paper boards you see in Chess tournaments (perhaps even one from a computer V human tournament) however the chess pieces in the film are very particular and I haven't found reference of any original boards that are close.

It's trivial nowadays to build a simple voice-controlled chess game, my idea was to build a game as faithful to the movie as I could - celebrating how far technology has come and how life can now directly imitate art. But I can't find the source of the chess glyphs!

One of my obsessions/backburner projects is the chess videogame in 2001 A Space Odyssey. I obtained a scan of the film cell that Douglas Trumbull made & projected (pictured). I believe it's a photograph of the paper boards that were used to annotate early computer-chess.
