I think there was a technology shift underlying this cultural shift — when I was a kid virtually nothing would let you arbitrarily change your username

this might be the most "I feel called out" replies I've gotten for anything I've ever posted

I feel like you might have been thinking of me specifically when writing this tweet.
My identity is strong and persistent. -
I’m not sure how long you had that handle before I met you, but, yes essentially

-
I picked "MouseChao" upon visiting the official Sonic Adventure 2 Battle chao forums when I was 12 I think. This led to me discovering PSO and evolving into "MowseChao" at 13 due to Section ID colors. So... You've known me basically since my username birth.
-
oh my gods I didn't know the spelling was specifically to game the PSO algorithm that's incredible

-
"mowse" gave Pinkal! (Higher level technique disks!) I ended up keeping the name because it's a more unique short handle than just "Mouse"

It's called "identity crisis".

Personally I like that my username is a more reliable unique identifier than my real name. The grass is greener, I guess :P
-
Don’t think I haven’t noticed it’s just Venonat backwards

A surprising number of pogo friends have failed to notice

The handle I've been using since I was 8 has my deadname in it. I'm slowly switching away but it's weirdly difficult. It feels... Like I should be consistent? idk
-
let your deadname sink to the bottom of the sea

Which accounts / identities are you referring to? I like to keep all mine segregated and compartmentalized. :) and just recently discovered my wife has a bunch and does the same thing LOL

I’m referring to the accounts that normal people who don’t brag about their opsec to strangers have :)

no but serious question: what are the 15yos using for persistent identifiers? legal names? some sort of meta-handles? do they _not_ have persistent ids and everyone actually updates what they remember them by?
-
that last one, mostly I follow a few younger people on tumblr who have gone through several URLs as they call the usernames and it’s just, whatever
-
on the one hand that's annoying, on the other hand that seems like a completely reasonable reaction to the massively invasive shit websites do these days. reminds me of https://marco.org/2015/01/09/a-teenagers-view-on-social-media … and the design choice explained there.

I'm not under the impression the usual motivation is to hide. They just... change their names. Because they want to.
