Surely Iain M. Banks’ Culture is at least interesting compared to paper clips? If the end-of-scarcity space communism isn’t authoritarian and prescriptive, there is room for individual novelty and transcendence?

Only interesting part of the Culture, IMHO, is the Ship-Minds, and they'd be a lot more interesting if they schizzed off into deep space and left the Culture behind.
