why would you leave your nukes on earth where they could be hit in a first strike or in planes or submarines which have to be manned when you could simply put them in low earth orbit over their intended targets ready to fire at a moments notice

I've seen plans for manned Cold War space stations that were essentially this, big motivator for early space race
I think it just comes down to difficulty of maintenance, and vulnerability- spacecraft are fragile, and there's no stealth, everyone can see everything
