I'm fascinated by these people psychologically, I really want to understand how these people think. I think at least part of it has to be that they watched things that had certain sets of moral assumptions (Avatar would be a good modern example since it's pretty de-growthy)-

And it combined with some prior psychological leaning towards zero-sum thinking to become their worldview. Essentially, they never progressed beyond a simplistic "one person's growth is another's suffering" worldview because it became an emotional local maxima for them.

This is an odd comparison, but it reminds me of Robert Kiyosaki's "We can't afford that" vs "How can we afford that" mindset dichotomy, just applied to societal rather than individual goals. Cheems are poor dads.
