optimism implies good things are possible which suggests one might be able to improve their own situation which implies personal responsibility for circumstances which is unacceptable

I think this gets pretty close but it explains reluctance to be an optimist, not why it’s low status 🤔

making a behavior which makes you feel bad low status is a good way to make less of it happen

I was thinking maybe in a “post”religious social order virtue is signalled by still having a strong awareness of the bad/evil in the world and being an optimist is in some ways an obviation of this moral “angels on a pinhead” counting - but I’m just armchairing here
When people sort themselves morally by how many bad- angels they claim to be aware of on the pinhead, saying “throw away the pin” is a no no
