Hard to overstate how Democrats have managed to shoot themselves in the foot with Puerto Rico Statehood. They took a bipartisan initiative (backed by Puerto Rico) to add a safely Democratic state and couldn’t even coalesce around it internally because “imperialism”.

How is maintaining a "territory" not imperialism? How would giving that territory full democratic representation be a form of imperialism? What kind of galaxy-brain shit is this??

Now I’m imagining a US where PR is a state and the new 51 Flag and the old 50 Flag both become a culture war symbol. Slow motion street brawls as far as the eye can see as each participant tries to count the stars on their interlocutor’s flag before swinging a bike lock
