Here are my optimistic Friday afternoon thoughts on aliens and the eleventy hojillion dollar asteroids. Probably none of this is unique to me, but I've not read it yet so feel free to link me someone who's put this better:

Some technologies may be the equivalent of nuclear in galactic scale. Advanced civilizations may be keeping an eye on more primitive ones to gage how close they are to inventing/developing them as they could prove destructive on broader scale than a single planet or solar system.
