My feeling is that many Republicans are embarrassed of Trump.
Hatred/fear of woke/far-left sustains his support among the rightwing elite - they don’t like him but feel they have more to lose with Dems.
If there was a decent R alternative, I’m sure many would switch over.

I'm not sure they require all that much skill tbh when it looks like the entire republican party seems willing to go along with it. But I do appreciate your optimism. I agree it's unlikely to be successful.
