Meritocracy isn't valuable because it provides "fair" or "just" outcomes - it doesn't, and can't. Even a perfect merit system is unjust, so long as we are born unequal.
Meritocracy is valuable because it provides *useful* outcomes - incentives to be the best we can be.

We hear a lot about fat-shaming. What about "fit shaming"? There is a segment of society that wants to even the playing field in the area of beauty by painting fit and slim people as self-obsessed, neurotic people and thus discourage people from joining their ranks.
