There is a strain within neoliberalism, its final size and influence undetermined, which seems to regard the final object of its philosophy as the recreation of the Spanish imperial system with minimalist glass & steel aesthetics.

Neoliberal thought contested a lot of ground with prog thought, and there were attempts at synthesis starting in the 1980s, but as soon as synthesis was achieved the progs colonized commerce to a greater degree than the neoliberals colonized the institutions.

Still, these are two very different lines of thinking, one descending from the tradition of Protestant socioreligious crusades and the other descending from a much deeper Anglo-Dutch commercial republican minarchism. One of these is totalizing and illiberal, the other is not.

They're lumped together because they are two parts of a larger Anglo culture, but they are distinct within that culture, and they aren't the only threads either, just the most dominant ones in the 20th century. Anglo conservatism may be unfashionable, but it's still a thing.
