Found a new favorite philosophy podcast, went to look up where the host did his PhD, & instead found this. I'm endlessly inspired by the idea that people can gain world-class expertise w/o needing approval from traditional gatekeepers, & by the sheer force of will to get there.

i don't think however this implies he's circumvented gate keeping unless he was awarded some honorary doctorate. i just means he went down another path, possibly less lucrative.

Probably more lucrative. He has a podcast and an audience for a book. How can philosophy phd's make money otherwise? Grants might pay the bills, but it won't make more income than a popular podcast! Or inform me!
