1/ Really fantastic piece. Sums up my attitude on the matter perfectly. My personal bias is that that if there is in fact a “there” there, then the simplest explanation might be automated drones of some sort. It should be fairly cheap/easy for an alien civilisation or AGI to coat

2/ the galaxy in von Neumann probes. Strategically I think this makes sense because you would want to make sure you know exactly who is in “the dark forest” without revealing anything essential about your actual self. Or perhaps that originating civilisation is long dead and

3/ these drones just roam the galaxy reporting back to no one.
Also it would make sense to have insight to what everyone’s doing to make sure some primitive race doesn’t accidentally activate a paperclip maximiser and ruin the game for everyone
