The U.S.' incompetence at handling coronavirus doesn't make me very confident about our ability to, say, fight a major war. Not to mention coping with climate change.

The hollowing out of institutions, resources, identity & ability to get things done is an indulgence only a country that believes it has won the end of history. All real external problems are solved and now it’s just a matter of dividing up the spoils among competing ingroups.
