How are we supposed to detect this?

Big cue I see is no flashing light. However if this isn’t your normal bank and you’re traveling, it’s advisable to go inside to complete your transaction if possible.

I've been told that ATM machines are not popular is Brazil.
-
If possible, ALWAYS go inside of a bank to make your transaction, especially if traveling abroad.

That is so much effort... how did they deploy that without being super suspicious looking?
-
They might have just brought along a clipboard and toolbag and did it in the middle of the day.

If you freeze-frame when she lifts up the facade, it actually has its own LCD screen - somehow there's software on the facade that is replicating the entire UI? (or at the very least screen-scraping the genuine ATM's screen?)

From what the policewoman says, it's a partially disassembled notebook with its own card reader, so I'd hazard it has a full copy of an unhappy path of attract mode > insert card > type in your PIN > error, which is more than enough for them to clone your card and PIN.

The lack of green flashing LED lights around the card insertion slot gave it away for me (I always look for those whenever I use an ATM).
-
The flashing light technology is just too advanced to be replicated by criminals :D
