  1. I'd like to thank the arsehats who stabbed my bike tires. Y'know, for being there when I needed an excuse not to cycle..
  2. I think I'm generally in favour of ABB - my main concern is to do with metrics - eg how do you measure research productivity? #gpss
  3. Sounds like UW is heading in the direction of ABB. Also seems like the admins have a reasonable grasp on some of the problems. #gpss
  4. Provost Bean: "A different budgeting model is no substitute for intelligence". Activity based budgeting seems very attractive though #gpss
  5. Pros & cons of activity based budgeting, which decentralizes university budgeting. Better incentives & transparency, less unity #gpss

  11. One way to think of it - importing / exporting degrees - degree holders as an educational commodity #gpss
  12. SRep Scott White, quoting someone else, "Education is the great equalizer" - couldn't agree more.
  13. Two panelists so far have advocated different policies for different universities in state. Good or bad? #gpss
  14. Sen Derek Kilmer "China has more honours kids than we have kids". Dragons rising and all that.. #gpss
  15. Local people need jobs, local companies need to look out of state for hiring. Makes the problem pretty obvious.. #gpss
  16. higher ed really just doesn't sell itself very well - just above other in state funding priority polls. This needs to improve!! #gpss
  17. Now onto first panel discussing funding models for higher ed. Lots of graphs and contradictory views from legislators #gpss
  18. WA tax structure gives very unstable income stream. Made worse voter initiatives that stop leg. from making changes without 2/3 maj #gpss
  19. Calling for more active lobbying from 4yr + grad college; apparently we're badly underrepresented - lobby day 09-10 needs to be big.. #gpss
  20. Keynote from SSen Lisa Brown on WA state budget and higher ed, plus details of tricks used to get past last session's cuts.. #gpss
