  4. Stresa is nice... on Lago Maggiore... swimming in the lake, boat rides, the funivia (cable lift) up Mottarone...
  5. About an hour or so to Stresa - cab to town - STILL blazing hot - not gonna walk it - tho could have easily - downhill and not very far...
  6. Now, the train ride from Milan was 2nd Class on the Cisalpino - FANTASTIC train - ultimately bound for Geneva - just great, comfortable...
  7. After a week in Lucca, off to Stresa in Piemonte... by train to Milan (via La Spezia - NOT Firenze - MUCH less expensive)...
  8. Pisa - 30 minute train ride. Get off at S. ROSSORE, not Pisa Centrale. 5 minute walk to the tower, rather than 45 minutes from Centrale.
  9. Beach is typica Italian style, gotta rent the umbrella and chairs, the beach itself is more like the Outer Banks than Italy - but it's there
  10. Need a beach fix? Viareggio is close. 18 minute train ride from Lucca. 10-15 minute walk to beach.
  11. Tuscan pesto (and Ligurian, for that matter) is SPECTACULAR... much different than any Ive had in the states. Highly individualized.
  12. There is no "supermarket" in the old town, so find a good market, baker, gelateria, paninoteca, foccacieria or whatever you interested in.
  13. If you are self catering, "La Grotta Salumeria & Pizzicheria (Meats and elicatessen is great (via Anfiteatro @ via Villungo)
  14. The Piazza Anfiteatro is a Roman-era piazza-style space (not an ampitheatre anymore) that host concerts [eriodically (saw Inti-Illimani)
  15. Piazza Napoleone on the western edge, has restaurants, banks, shops all close by.
  16. The town is a hodgepodge of small medieval size streets, with shops, businesses, etc. located all over the town.
  17. Therefore, they are in amazing condition. The Passeggiata Mura Urbane, is a "street" atop the wall, and EVERYONE walks, bikes, etc. there.
  18. Walls are Rennaissance era. Designed as fortifications and as a defense from cannon fire, they've never actually been used for that purpose
  19. Stayed in a 5 room self catering apartment in Lucca - no AC, but nice to have the space. Inside the walls (Mura Urbane) of the old town...
  20. After Riomaggiore, took the train to Lucca, Toscano via LaSpezia and Viareggio.
