  1. Shards of pottery everywhere here, some of it prob vy old. Interesting to pick up and try to discern what each piece was used for.
  2. ... Lights strung across the street, lots of beer and happy old folks, and some superb turkish clarinet and trumpet playing.
  3. (1:15am) Heard some music from my window, followed it through the town for half mile or so. Think i found a wedding celebration.
  4. Feels great to leave Istanbul. I found it surprisingly underwhelming & difficult to access a real city under the thick veneer of tourism.
  5. On the 9hr bus ride to Izmir. Now crossing the Bosphorus by ferry. Beautiful clear cool day.
  6. After visiting one of the reputedly best baklava shops in Turkey, I now understand what all the fuss is about.
  7. Mercifully cool and cloudy day.
  8. To my friends at the LC: let me know if i can dial-in. If so, pls txt the details to me at +905313560452.
  9. Man, oppressive humidity here. Far tougher weather than anywhere else so far. Hot hot hot even at 9am.
  10. Ok, i take that back. I just found the guy hawking tubs of live leaches, swimming around like a thousand crazed strips of electrical tape.
  11. So far, unimpressed by Istanbul's "Grand" Bazaar. In a bazaar deathmatch, both Erbil and Sulaymania would destroy this tourist trap.
  12. Istanbul.
  13. On the 11hr night bus to Istanbul. Turkish buses have male attendants who constantly serve water, tea, and purple zebra-striped twinkies.
  14. My German hotel owner has a PhD in the "vernacular architecture" of these cave dwellings. I'm hoping to hear from him what that means.
  15. Just toured the underground city in Kaymakli. Amazingly big and spacious. Some tunnels 9km long.
  16. In the rose valley outside of Göreme. Filled with little ancient churches carved in the stone cones.
  17. Cappadocia! Arriving at night in Göreme--extra surreal.
  18. So far, it seems the more English a Turk speaks, the more likely he is to lie or cheat. Sign language the best way to get reliable info.
  19. Now, on bus to Kayseri. Hills fully green now, no longer dusty; the fist-sized blue-purple thistles replaced by bright orange wildflowers.
  20. Now leaving Kurdistan, bringing the first stage of this trip to an end. Their struggle dominated my attention here more than i expected.
