  1. Four words that soured a 10-year working relationship: "Consider lowering your rates." (I didn't.)
  2. This "assicon" could come in very handy the next time an agency asks for lower rates: (_x_). See http://bit.ly/7a3YL9
  3. Ditto NO/SV "kontroll". RT @anglais Don’t assume “contrôle” is “control” in English. Think audit, verify, check, test, monitor, track, etc.
  4. Me too! RT @RKKerns I hate translating updates to a document originally translated by an ape. :-((
  5. @FRENJA True or not, it would have been polite to let you know the outcome of the test.
  6. New blog post: I don't care... http://bit.ly/5skVsX
  7. Moral of the story: Make sure agencies accept your rates b4 doing any tests, even if pigs fly and they are willing to pay you for the test.
  8. So glad I didn't waste time on test for German agency, since they now tell me they "already have enough translators in my price segment."
  9. Just got Oct. ATA Chronicle in the mail, 3 weeks after picking up a copy at conference. How I miss the Royal Mail, strikes notwithstanding!
  10. @FRENJA You could argue that they defrauded the customer too, by using your translation to win the job and then hiring someone else.
  11. @FRENJA That Canadian agency needs to be named and shamed. Why not contact Marketplace, a CBC-TV consumer affairs show? http://bit.ly/7GWJIV
  12. @language_news Looking forward to reading your column!
  13. Heading out to post office with a mailing to prospective direct clients.
  14. @bonnjill PS. Good to hear the lunch date went well :-)
  15. @bonnjill Yes, I think BMW too lets people pick up their car at the factory and drive it around Europe b4 it's shipped across the Atlantic.
  16. Received request from German agency for rather long test translation (~500 wds). Is it normal for German agencies to pay for such tests?
  17. In case the translation market dries up, I have a new fallback career as a model for my wife's handmade accessories: http://bit.ly/y9pb5
  18. Reply to British agency wanting lower rate: "While my rate may be above the market average, so is the quality of my work." #bottomfeed
  19. @bonnjill I'd never have thought of car dealers as a source of work, but a dealer in Ottawa refers me clients importing Volvos from Sweden.
  20. Sent a polite but firm refusal today to an agency asking me to reduce my rates. Pointed out that I hadn't increased their rate for 2.5 yrs.
