The eternal round of fence maintenance. Very acid soil means posts rot fast—within five years. Replaced two posts today, but more to do.

All eight of Daisy's premature piglets have survived so far and all are doing well. It's amusing to watch such teeny piglets scamper about.

@ Yes, they've survived their first 24 hours. If they all last the week, then they should be fine.

Our teeny Berkshire pigs are thriving. I didn't think all of them would make it through the night, but they did.

Daisy, one of our Berkshire sows, has farrowed. Three weeks early, in a corner of the field. Very small piglets but all seem okay.

Walked out of a first aid course tonight. The instructor was incomprehensible and spoke far too fast. Told him, but he just kept gabbling.

@ But my point was he, too, had possession of a firearm. If it is a strict liability offence, he, too, should have been charged.

Knackered! Just spent a couple of hours shovelling liquid mud uphill in the pig pens. "Only" 2-4 inches deep, but very hard going.

@ She also let herself out and came down to the feed shed to ask if her dinner was ready. It was, so we went back out together.

@ None to spare at the moment. Won't start breeding again until next spring. And still not happy with their conformation.

Our primary school has an inservice day for teacher training so the boys are home. What did we do? Go for a five-mile hike in the rain. Fun!

An advantage of living out here is there are no lights to overwhelm the stars. Tonight, we watched half a dozen meteorites flash down.

Doris, one of our Berkshire sows, has just been for a walk. Down the road! She slid the bolt on the gate to her pen and off she went. Pigs!

Exhausted. Just finished 5 hours of lifting neeps, then gathering, trimming, bagging and carrying them in. All by hand. Dinner next.
