  1. actual ATLAS jargon: "stopless recovery" http://bit.ly/92SalR I can never tell if these terms are coined with a wink or not.
  2. http://twitpic.com/qotzu The 80's roots of the LHC event displays #LHC #ALICE #ATLAS #CMS
  3. and btw, the LHC was just about to deliver 900 GeV collisions last year, when *someone* just *had* do one more magnet ramp test. imagine...
  4. et voila ATLAS shows up to the collision party, a little later than the others: Run 140541, Event 171897 http://bit.ly/7DdVNj
  5. But people should realize that these LHC collisions are the same energy that CERN achieved in 1985, and less than half that of Fermilab
  6. First collisions at the LHC, tho only two expts going public: ALICE (http://bit.ly/8GDu8Y) and CMS (http://bit.ly/6MukKq). More to come.
  7. And it begins: first 2009 beam events from ATLAS http://bit.ly/7DdVNj (450 GeV protons on collimator...)
  8. The works of Erik Nitsche http://bit.ly/5WGZL5 - K stumbled onto a set of his amazing General Dynamics posters in Geneva
  9. Who was teaching physics at Bronx Science from the mid-40's to the mid-60's? 7 Nobel prizes: not bad (h/t MJT) http://bit.ly/1farc9
  10. Jeanne-Claude, with the Gates-colored hair, RIP. I'll miss seeing her at art things around town. http://bit.ly/2LaOVp
  11. the "collisions on monday" rumor was, probably unsurprisingly to many, just a rumor. still, i want to believe.
  12. voila, the LHC status screen http://bit.ly/mDJAD
  13. dawn is not for another hour but i can already see the light at the end of this tunnel
  14. The thought of Myhrvold cooking does not make me hungry. http://bit.ly/3cVjUA (& dig the faint praise from Dufresne...)
  15. of course "my" detector was fixed by an expert within minutes, but they won't let us go back in just yet. c'est la vie - long night ahead.
  16. and zoinks it's worse than i expected: two detectors, one of them on my watch, out for the night due to glitchy readout systems
  17. i'm not expecting any sweet sounds (or beam) on my upcoming night shift.
  18. getting a cassandra complex. hate when this happens.
  19. is in the ATLAS run meeting. Must be 100 people here...
  20. lurking semi-legitimately in ATLAS control room
