  1. Girlfriend Experience (09 Soderbergh B-) Lots of great ideas, love it when Soderbergh goes low-fi. Wish the shoot script wasn't 1st draft.
  2. Collapse (09 Smith A) Avant-garde doc on peak oil crisis. Works better as psych experiment (& litmus test) than call to collective paranoia.
  3. Post Grad (09 Jenson D-) A film you watch & think "has this screenwriter ever met a human?" Each character is unbearably inane. Bledel=blah.
  4. Bronson (08 Refn W/H) I can see the talent in the film-making but couldn't stomach the violence. Turned it off after 20 min.
  5. The Headless Woman (08 Martel A-) Love her storytelling methods. So much dread and excitement with so little happening in the frame!
  6. Bad Lieutenant POCNO (09 Herzog A-) Basically a Law & Order episode on acid. Take me home, lizards!
  7. Orphan (09 Collet-Serra A+) Skewers suburban paranoia & modern female hysteria, greatest ending in a horror film this year.
  8. The Box (09 Kelly C+) Weirdness doesn't culminate to much but so fun to have real WTF moments while watching a film.
  9. Objectified (09 Hustwit B-) Not quite the brilliant microhistory Helvetica was but I'll never think of a chair the same way.
  10. Halloween 2 (09 Zombie D-) You know you're bored when you find yourself saying 'the sound design of this slaughter is quite good!'
  11. Private Lives of Pippa Lee (09 Miller B+) Love the story but none of the women in this film can act. Against Keanu that's saying something.
  12. District 9 (09 Blomkamp C-) Collapses under weight of its own premise but nice to see H'wood try to make at least one film w/ a real idea.
  13. Lioness (08 McLagan & Sommers B+) Great access to a story that would otherwise be ignored - really backed off of asking obvious tough q's.
  14. House of the Devil (09 West C+) Well-intentioned tribute to a genre that wasn't that interesting to begin with. Love seeing Dee Wallace tho!
  15. Harvard Beats Yale (08 Rafferty D) R is one of the great muckrakers of our time, granted access to Skull & Bones, makes boring sports doc?
  16. Untitled (09 Parker C-) Strong start but shooting the first draft of a script = characters that make no sense. Love the glasses on makeouts.
  17. Interview With a Vampire (94 Jordan B+) Nice to revisit good old fashioned gay vampire mythology. Dunst is amazing here & lovely SF scenes.
  18. Reel Paradise (05 James A-) Like Apocalypse Now where the whole family is Col Kurtz. Love to see a follow up on how this year impacted kids.
  19. Rise Above: The Story of Tribe 8 (03 Flannigan B+) Loathed mid-section slide into dating gossip but a fascinating insight into raconteurs.
  20. Paranormal Activity (07 Peli A-) Cheering for the 'underdog' is certainly part of the charm but a genuine thriller to watch with a crowd.
