  1. Objectified (09 Hustwit B-) Not quite the brilliant microhistory Helvetica was but I'll never think of a chair the same way.
  2. Halloween 2 (09 Zombie D-) You know you're bored when you find yourself saying 'the sound design of this slaughter is quite good!'
  3. Private Lives of Pippa Lee (09 Miller B+) Love the story but none of the women in this film can act. Against Keanu that's saying something.
  4. District 9 (09 Blomkamp C-) Collapses under weight of its own premise but nice to see H'wood try to make at least one film w/ a real idea.
  5. Lioness (08 McLagan & Sommers B+) Great access to a story that would otherwise be ignored - really backed off of asking obvious tough q's.
  6. House of the Devil (09 West C+) Well-intentioned tribute to a genre that wasn't that interesting to begin with. Love seeing Dee Wallace tho!
  7. Harvard Beats Yale (08 Rafferty D) R is one of the great muckrakers of our time, granted access to Skull & Bones, makes boring sports doc?
  8. Untitled (09 Parker C-) Strong start but shooting the first draft of a script = characters that make no sense. Love the glasses on makeouts.
  9. Interview With a Vampire (94 Jordan B+) Nice to revisit good old fashioned gay vampire mythology. Dunst is amazing here & lovely SF scenes.
  10. Reel Paradise (05 James A-) Like Apocalypse Now where the whole family is Col Kurtz. Love to see a follow up on how this year impacted kids.
  11. Rise Above: The Story of Tribe 8 (03 Flannigan B+) Loathed mid-section slide into dating gossip but a fascinating insight into raconteurs.
  12. Paranormal Activity (07 Peli A-) Cheering for the 'underdog' is certainly part of the charm but a genuine thriller to watch with a crowd.
  13. I Am An Animal: Story of Ingrid Newkirk & PETA (07 Galkin B) Does a fine job of portraying an activist & her motivation w/o being a polemic.
  14. At Death House Door (08 Gilbert B-) Film suffers from clunky framing devices but subject has led a fascinating life & has great insights.
  15. Whip It (09 Barrymore A-) DB's vision of suburban angst and unrest surprisingly piquant for someone of her pedigree. Sweet & funny.
  16. From Dusk Till Dawn (96 Rodriguez C+) Feels like a really fun (but icky) student film until the vamps show up. Salma's entrance = timeless.
  17. Inglourious Basterds (09 Tarantino A+) 2009, the year of lefty war porn. Still, this will inspire love of cinema for generations to come.
  18. The Reckoning (09 Yates B+) Bold structural choice to do side by side comparison of US/Uganda & why they won't/can't join ICC. Drab visuals.
  19. Last Days of Disco (98 Stillman A) Such a fun one to revisit. Infinitely quotable, great cast. I miss the 90s indie auteurs.
  20. The Cove (09 Psihoyos D-) Almost dedicated to not providing information. The dolphins deserve better than self-important performance art.
