  6. Patience and consistency must be evident when training your dog. Don't be disappointed if your dog doesn't obey your commands right away.
  7. Gentle and proven training techniques will prevent behavioral problems and foster a loving and cooperative bond between you and your dog.
  8. When training your dog, go to an empty field or a private area so your dog will focus only on you and not be distracted by other things.
  9. Always train your dog with as little distrataction as possible. Toys. people or other dogs will make concentration difficult.
  10. Scolding or hitting your dog will cause him to fear you. The next time you call him, he will not respond for fear of what you will do.
  11. Provide proper shelter when your dog is outside. Make sure the shelter has some type of insulation during the winter months.
  12. Make sure your dog has a collar and ID tag on at all times - even in your own backyard.
  13. Regularly have your dog vaccinated against rabies and tested for heartworm. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
  14. Your dog is part of your family so include him in family events whenever you can.
  15. Dogs need and crave companionship so even if you have an outside dog, be sure to spend quality time with him on a regular basis.
  16. If your dog responds well to your command, reward him with treats and praise. If he does not obey you, just ignore him.
  17. Your dog sees you as the leader of the pack and looks to you for guidance and protection. Value the respect your dog gives you.
  18. Never lose your temper or shout at your dog. Hitting or humiliating your dog will do more harm than good to your relationship with your dog.
  19. A well-trained dog is a credit to its owner and a source of much satisfaction and enjoyment for years to come.
  20. Negative reinforcement may stop unwanted behavior in the short term but will damage your relationship with your dog in the long run.
