  9. Though I didn't like the RMS interview (not because of RMS, but of his bad chemistry w the reporter). I respect RMS a lot actually.
  10. Ok, ok. I was reading this and the RMS interview too: http://poynder.blogspot.com/2006/03/interview-with-eric-raymond.html
  11. @rbuels: The mere act of publishing code knowing it'll be on the net forever forces you to do a minimum improvement on quality overall.
  12. @rbuels All I know is that at least valuable but relatively modest gains are inevitable. Your published work is perennial.
  13. Thanks for bearing with me. If this is old speech to some, let them not forget the others who are stuck.
  14. First, realistic but valuable returns, like: peer review; better design and documentation as a consequence of having to publish...
  15. So next time you're stuck with trillions of lines of lollipop-sucking code, think about open sourcing. That will give very fast returns.
  16. That's even true for a solo PhD student project! Eric Raymond resonates again "Centralization doesn't scale".
  17. That's obvious - computer vision, crazy video games, Google-scale distributed systems, etc.
  18. OK, reviewing some open source philosophy. Bear w me. Computer science in the 2000's has the marked characteristics of being complex.
  19. "Secrecy is the enemy of quality" - Eric Raymond. It is always good to remember. If you can't see the code, assume it is bad.
  20. I can't relate to people that think "I just want you to hurt, like I do." (refrain by Randy Newman) Why more pain? Last thing I'd wish!
