  1. California did not get a grant yet, but keep fingers crossed. We do know of at least four projects in second round of review. . .
  2. This is not all the first ground grants, we are told. More will come in January and February 2010.
  3. Compare what BB ARRA grants went to public computer centers and sustainable adoption grants: $7.3 million and $2.4 million, respectively.
  4. Looks like the grants were heavy on the infrastructure side: $121.6 went to middle mile projects, and $51.4 m. went to last mile projects.
  5. Just a quick few thoughts on the NTIA and RUS broadband ARRA grants that went out last week. $182.7 million in grants were announced.
  6. Among suggestions: public private partnerships, WiFi/WiMax systems, state website showing public access points, regional BB buys/tech supprt
  7. We are "thinking outside the box" about how to get faster more robust broadband to our libraries, leveraging everything we can think of.
  8. I was so pleased to see a great turn out & a lot of energy and enthusiasm for the mission. Stacey Aldrich, State Librarian, did a great job.
  9. Broadband is critical in our libraries, because they are some of the few FREE Internet access points for low income persons.
  10. On Dec. 14-15, every CA state library met in Sacramento re how to best use a Gates Foundation grant to improve broadband in libraries.

  12. Enjoying a holiday fire? Lower your thermostat when the fire is on. Lowering your thermostat five degrees takes 10% off of your energy bill.
  13. Got a new cellphone for the holidays? Be sure to drop the old one off for recycling at a place like Staples.
  14. Wrap a gift in a cloth item like a dishcloth, hand towel or bandana for a stylish wrap that is also a useful gift.
  15. There are organic tree farms that do not spray their Christmas trees with pesticides.
  16. Did you know LED lights use 90% less energy than traditional Xmas lights? This means savings on your energy bill.
  17. Buy LED energy efficient Christmas lights which use less energy. Don't put your holiday lights on during the day when energy demand is high.
  18. Just a few ideas: Reuse comics from the newspaper as gift wrap. Reuse the front of Xmas cards as gift tags for your presents.
  19. that you also consider greening your holiday. Please reduce, reuse and recycle as you go about your holiday.
  20. Tis the season for sharing with those who are less fortunate. I just wanted to suggest that as you donate food, volunteer, give a warm coat
