  1. From Stepanov's 'Elements of Programming': "A discrete Archimedean semiring lacks additive inverses." I've been saying that for years! LOL!
  2. Preparing questions for interview of Alexander Stepanov re his new book "Elements of Programming."
  3. Cleared the decks for next week's big Platypus code-a-thon. Except for one business task, seven days of coding, testing, building. Heaven!!
  4. Groovy is underappreciated as a scripting language. At times, it seems, even by the #Groovy community.
  5. FOSS hosting site tigris.org is wholly down (for hours). It's hard to complain about free hosting, but if I can't check-in code...Kenai.com?
  6. If you love vanilla ice cream, try Haagen-Dazs Five Vanilla Bean. The finest vanilla I've ever had! And vanilla is by far my favorite flavor
  7. Using #Groovy to write functional tests for Platypus. All scripts. Very productive and much more fun than I anticipated.
  8. When designing and not wanting to use UML, I'm finding mind-mapping software to be an excellent solution. Freemind & Xmind are OSS & good.
  9. @Kentbeck. Disagree re bookshelf. Umberto Eco once said of his 30K books: The ones I *haven't* read are the ones that define me. Very subtle
  10. Writing about calling Ant from w/in Java program to do file and directory management. This approach makes the code truly OS-independent.
  11. Anyone out there using 'design by contract' in Java? If so, what tool are you using? I found a lot of semi-quiescent OSS tool projects.
  12. How satisfying when you get a complex Ant file to work! Feels like programming- breakthrough elation, except the artifacts aren't as pretty.
  13. RT @kathysierra "rather than focus on our own brand, what if we imagine our job is to realize/improve the 'brand' of our users?" The key!
  14. Toiling on CI servers: Bamboo, TeamCity & Hudson. Of these, the most intuitive by far was Hudson. Up and running in a snap! Good job Hudson!
  15. Umm... Joe Levano -> Joe Lovano
  16. Listening to Joe Levano's album "Rush Hour" Very niiice.
  17. @dcbriccetti Thx! Had not thought of doing that <sound of lightbulb switching on!>. If I miss the folks I stopped following, I'll do that.
  18. About to remove Twitterers whose tweets I only scan. They bury the tweets I want to read. Don't know how others can follow > 100 Twitterers.
  19. Writing a column on OSI's highly restrictive definition of OSS. Making the case for OSS-with-restrictions licenses, a la Creative Commons.
  20. Green pics do little to help Iran, IMO. But changing your Twitter time to +3:30GMT helps hide Iranian protesters. RT @lakarune #iranelection
