  1. Did a lovely show in WV w/ John Lilly, who one-ups Jimmie Rodgers' yodeling style into sweet and satisfying original songs.
  2. Saw Darrell Scott @ Rice Festival in TX--man alive! Back to the woodshed! Concerts of my own in Houston, Boerne, and Austin 11/19-11/22.
  3. Jamming good for the soul, part J: Joe Jencks joins me to jam at Jalopy tonight, in Brooklyn. Great room, great harmonies, www.jalopy.biz
  4. Jamming is good for the soul: Fun show w/ Jon Shain last night in Marblehead, MA. "Saints & Sinners" tonight w/ Toby Walker in Franklin.
  5. "... he who bids the law rule may be deemed to bid...reason alone rule, but he who bids man rule adds an element of the beast.." -Aristotle
  6. Love soulful falsetto: Howlin' Wolf, Tommy Johnson, Skip James, Sam Collins... Recorded a holiday blues w/ Beaucoup Blue--falsettos galore.
  7. Found delicious old p.d. gospel song, "What Are They Doing in Heaven Today," going on my next CD. Suffering + transcendence = the blues.
  8. Health care "debate" warped by the $$ of big-time crooks. Escaped into Donald Westlake's "Get Real" and his endearing small-time crooks.
  9. A quiet cabin in the woods--the songwriter's fantasy. Finishing 3 days of writing at Sonny Ochs' cabin in upstate NY. Don't wanna leave!
  10. What is it about the affinity between Unitarianism and acoustic music? Driving to Virginia today to find out. :-) http://www.suusi.org
  11. Random ancient quote that tickled me, from Simonides: "Painting is silent poetry, and poetry is painting with words."
  12. Was just interviewed by my buddy Sharon Goldman for her excellent songwriting blog: http://www.songwritingscene.com
  13. A model of success on his own terms: saw Jeff Daniels sing in NYC. Fun, good guy, the un-Hollywood. Lookng fwd to seeing "God of Carnage."
  14. Every time I think I'm a pretty good musician, I go to see someone like Kurt Elling. Puts things in perspective. :-) Back to the woodshed.
  15. Back home from Kerrville, rarin' to write more, and looking forward to six weeks of relative quiet and domestic bliss. :-)
  16. At Kerrville as a civilian, cheered on Joe Crookston and Drew Nelson's ferocious sets. Hanging with Tom Prasada-Rao & Joe Jencks.
  17. Went to see "The Soloist," loved it! Movingly shows the healing power (and limits) of music & friendship. Hollywood got one right.
  18. What's a melody for? Suzanne Vega: a "code of emotion," "connected, like sense of smell, to memory" http://tinyurl.com/cym5p9 Viva melody!
  19. Ain't that love? My wife and I reading aloud Aristotle's "On the Soul" before bed. 2 minds > 1, and she says it puts her to sleep. :-)
  20. Back from Folk Alliance in Memphis--excited about music by Brad Yoder, Kraig Kenning, Cahalen David Morrison, Laurie McClain, David Ferrard.
