  1. @paleofuture Bacon is the hipster food of choice? How did I miss this?
  2. @michaelk42 I didn't say you said that. I think that's what @jonswerens thinks you were arguing though based on his counterarguments.
  3. @jonswerens Religion makes claims about the afterlife, and what will happen to you forever if you don't believe. The state can't touch that.
  4. @jonswerens wht I think we do have 2 recognize abt religion though is that it lays claims 2 ppl's hearts & minds in a way the state cnt.
  5. @jonswerens In general, I think it's incredibly stupid to say religion is the root of all evil.
  6. @jonswerens But neither can you deny that religious zealotry can lead to violence as much as nationalistic fervor.
  7. @jonswerens Yep. And it's a point I make all the time.
  8. @jonswerens That's why the Soviets suppressed religion. Because they didn't want to share the power.
  9. @jonswerens Also, the Soviets fulfilled the same institutional role as the Holy Roman Catholic Church did pre-modern states.
  10. @jonswerens Don't you think comparing body counts across time is a little dishonest given advancements in weaponry and population explosion?
  11. @tkingdoll Looking for something that's actually sunny AND fantastic.
  12. @tkingdoll Hmm. Considering the preponderance of books our club reads w/ thoroughly depressing themes, I might want to skip the rec. then.
  13. @pzmyers It's like little bits of crazy piped directly into our brains.
  14. RT @pzmyers: OMG. Gene Ray, the TimeCube guy, is on twitter as @Wisest_Human.
  15. @michaelk42 Well put. Well put.
  16. @jonswerens Although allowing a supernatural being whose goals are not obvious to control me is one objectionable thing about religion to me
  17. @jonswerens I understand the theology implied. It just struck me as amusing when stated so abruptly.
  18. Via @malfeitor: I did not Shop this pic. This is really what it says! http://twitpic.com/ojyr9
  19. RT @IDoubtIt @MsInformation @JeffWagg: NYT book review of Michael Specter's "Denialism" http://is.gd/4QtYL Sounds promising.
