mise_en_scene

  1. coraline(2009): visually impressive & surprisingly scary with unsettling animation. the sowing motif stitches the whole plot together 95/100
  2. bride wars (2009): clunky writing telegraphs the plot from a mile away. leads try (and fail) to bale water out of this sinking ship. 70/100
  3. anchorman (2004): bits of comedic gold against generic ferrell goofiness. the supporting cast breaks this out of a stereotypical mold 91/100
  4. push (2009): certainly have been worse "super-power" movies but outside of a few memorable scenes originality is woefully lacking 79/100
  5. the jerk(1979): proto-typical slapstick goof comedy that crackles with wit. martin is so good it makes you sad at how far he's fallen 94/100
  6. twilight (2008):some lingering looks are laugh inducing, but better than the normal vampire fare. i will see the second. 85/100
  7. the princess bride(1987): quotable and fun. some parts can get cheesy, but if you're watching with a kid the humor is more endearing 87/100
  8. brazil(1985):gilliam's intensely precise writing and direction dominates this film and makes sam's dream sequences so very liberating 97/100
  9. contact(1997): a personal favorite, but far from perfect. succeeds because of a brisk plot, authentic emotions, and plausible science 96/100
  10. beowulf(2007): epic and eye-popping shots show why this had to be cgi, but the tech still isn't quite there to not make it feel 'off' 87/100
  11. the dark knight(2008):a substantive plot teetering on the edge of being too bloated. ledger's joker is unhinged in all the right ways 92/100
  12. hancock (2008): very much a movie that seems to be going in two directions. oddly, smith is more endearing when he's a slovenly drunk 86/100
  13. pink floyd the wall (1982): crafted to engage a viewer as much as the album does a listener. powerful visuals compliment epic songs 95/100
  14. volver (2006): almodóvar successfully revisits his familiar theme of 'perverted' love. gorgeous shots abound and cruz is spellbinding 94/100
  15. role models(2008):definitely under rated but not quite to the level of cult classic. kids cursing is always funny, but not for all 88/100
  16. what about bob?(1991): if murray would have started killing people it would have been a great horror movie. dreyfuss is too sour 81/100
  17. escape from new york(1981): russell excels as a gruff a-hole. interesting plot but it's boxed into a future that isn't so futuristic 87/100
  18. the hudsucker proxy (1994): satirical and funny. very well acted and enough 'bite' to make this a real winner from the coen bros. 95/100
  19. the thief and the cobbler (recobbled cut) (2007): compelling story & unique hand-drawn 3d animation compete with unfinished sequences 86/100
  20. Neco z Alenky (1988):absurdly bizarre version of carroll's alice in wonderland. overpowering sound effects hurt surreal visuals. 79/100
