  1. @diveintomark Persistence is the key. Eventually, you'll be able to use the argument "if I get one I'll stop asking for it".
  2. R: making difficult things simple and simple things impossible.
  3. @gappy3000 yep, the redback is very venomous, but fortunately not too aggressive.
  4. @ChrisDiehl Probably about 3-3.5cm. I was too keen to get up close with a ruler. :)
  5. Found a very serious redback living in my shed. Largest I've seen. http://yfrog.com/bb93862740j http://yfrog.com/j5p7qj
  6. @dwf Congrats! Keep in mind that we've got PhD programs here in Australia too. ;)
  7. @boscoh More or less difficult, do you think, than getting modern dancers to a science lecture?
  8. Thinking about how to explain naive Bayesian spam filtering to high-school students. Having trouble recalling what I knew back then.
  9. @dwf "... plus a constant!" :)
  10. Some of these maths jokes are terribly funny: "You might be a mathematician if you think fog is a composition" http://bit.ly/UXlmT
  11. Fixed point theorem: Put a map of where you are on the ground. Exactly one point on the map is directly above the point it represents.
  12. @arthegall "first contact with git" as in "take me to your remote origin"? :)
  13. There would be a certain poetry in changing the name of Google's new language "Go" to "Issue 9": http://bit.ly/4nGa46
  14. I must say though, free Internet tethering from my phone did a lot to cover the gap while we waited.
  15. Finally! We have the interwebs at home again.
  16. @chris_deal Select the text of the email, right-click and run it through text-to-speech for extra awesome.
  17. ... and the rush to get everything done before for Christmas break begins!
  18. @lizbt One word: Firefly.
  19. Reading through books on Choquet theory and I feel like a kid in a candy store. So many sweet (and hopefully applicable) results abound.
  20. Struggling to twist my head around some functional analysis. Not sure if my half-remembered undergraduate classes are helping or hindering.
