  1. Advice on stuck EC2s: 'ec2-detach-volume --force ..' to release EBSs, ignore stuck EC2: no billing for them and they eventually go away.
  2. Someone at Amazon gave me good advice to working around "stuck" EC2 instances. I am now "un-annoyed" :-)
  3. Has now been 4 hours since a EC2instance got stuck on EMS volume errors and I tried to shut it down. Amazon needs a 'kill it now' option.
  4. Hmm - my stuck EC2 instance still has not terminated as requested after 1 hour - logs report mucho errors on EBS volumes. Need to unplug :-)
  5. Hmm. I just had an EC2 instance become unresponsive, and shutting it down did not free the mounted EBS - this is why you need EBS snapshots
  6. One advantage MonoDB has over CouchDB is sort-of OK authentication that works out of the box with a few minutes setup. Big CouchDB problem.
  7. Bummer: Jerry Weinberg's medical condition. His early book 'Egoless Programmer' had a fine effect on my career. His later books: also good.
  8. Just finished writing a DevX article on writing Wave Robots in Java - fun stuff!
  9. Latex symbols guide: http://bit.ly/jpGzd - I feel sorry for people who like to write, but don't use Latex
  10. Nice: JRuby 1.4.0 final is released :-)
  11. Using Amazon AWS (EC2, EBS, etc.): after a while, it gets to be like driving a car: you don't think about driving, just your destination :-)
  12. Rinari: the keyboard shortcuts for navigating Rails projects: http://bit.ly/2ew4yH
  13. Rinari: http://rinari.rubyforge.org/
  14. The Rinari Rails tools for Emacs are good - tried them last night. Good when switching between OS X/Ubuntu (lighter weight than RubyMine)
  15. Wow - Chromium browser is fast on Ubuntu 9.10
  16. Awesomely good talk on Hadoop + Pig (use cases at Twitter)
  17. Working on a DevX article on Wave programming with some new ideas - there are already good online tutorials, so I want to add something new.
  18. My wife and I are helping a friend of a friend process hidef of her Yoga classes for kids -- she used to be a super model, vids look great
  19. Great example use of RDFa http://bit.ly/ngZpg (view source)
  20. Getting some light snow up in the mountains. cool :-) Good weather for writing code.
