  2. used mutsu apples to make a crisp. didn't hold their shape, but taste is wonderful. apples are ENORMOUS and sweet this year.
  3. swordfish has been amazing recently. thick steaks. seared in cast iron skillet. flip, then 425 deg oven for about 20 mins. perfectly cooked.

  6. When a bottle of wine is okay but not quite =there=, just cook with it. I made a kick-ass coq au vin last night from a ho-hum pinot noir.
  7. reports say this is going to be an incredible apple season - big, juicy, and sweet. we see crisps, applesauce, cakes in our future.
  8. stone-walled subterranean javen called drinkN having concoctions mixed for us based an 1-word suggestions. yum.
  9. thinking that corn might be good enough this year to make a huge batch of corn chowder to freeze. probably no gazpacho to freeze though.
  10. BLT. heirloom tomato, nitrite-free niman ranch bacon, arugula, good mild rye bread. i could eat that every day. when tomatoes in season.
  11. thinking about joining a meat CSA. grass fed, humanely raised, no hormones. sounds like a good thing.
  12. headed to the farmers' market in town tonight. 1st time this year. hope the tomatoes, corn, local honey, & goodies are still there at 6 pm.
  13. need to make a big bowl of fresh corn and black bean salad. corn has been okay in the northeast so far. maybe it will get even better.
  14. a colleague (in new england) found a black widow spider in grapes bought from a supermarket. yikes. wash grapes, or better, don't buy them!
  15. what to do with a few pounds of bourbon soaked cherries... puree and add to fudge sauce? or swirl into homemade vanilla ice cream?
  16. learned today that yeast, even when frozen, doesn't last 7 years... it was worth a try.
  17. tomato sandwich on good dense bread... mayo... a teeny bit of murray river pink salt frmo australia... fresh ground pepper... summer!!!
  18. reading 'in defense of food' by michael pollan. it's changing my life. all foodies need to read it. next up is 'the omnivore's dilemma'.
  19. had a jersey tomato sandwich today. not great but it's still early in the season... we have hope for this season...
  20. hope the heirloom tomatoes and corn this year are better than last, but afraid that the rain will prove just as bad for them.
