Great writers, teachers, filmmakers, parents, developers, artists... all share a common practice: strategic unhelpfulness.

@ my husband uses euphemisms: "Do you want the 'interesting' news or the 'counter-intuitive' news." Puzzle to map them to bad/good

@ any day you get to use the phrase 'cargo cult' is a good day ;) There was no way to know what I meant from my tweet. No worries.

@ Yes! "In-reply-to" is perfect. (I'd settle for anything that suggests, motivated-by, prompted-by, triggered-by...)

@ I think it was a scalability thing around checking each reader's individual opt-in settings. That's when the 'hack' started...

@ yes, a context issue. The use-case for @, but cc all is a generalized reply, but meaningful only w/ context you can't paste in

@ use-case: a general tweet, but... *in a context*. The context IS the thing you're replying to; 140 chars too few to copy/paste

@ how do you opt to review replies to all users? I thought that choice was removed (which I'm actually happy about).

@ I think in some cases it could work. Problem doing it first time is you interrupt *flow*, sometimes crucial to the user experience.

@ I disagree. (kind of). I think it's a different use-case that is not fully served by @, RT, and 1st-class tweet.

@ I've not seen this abused, though believe it can be. It's a simple workaround for a use-case not well-addressed at the moment

Clarification: prefixing @ w/ ANYTHING behaves as though "cc all followers". Doesn't matter what. I just use "*" because it's festive.

@ I was offering *a* way to do it, not *the* way. I realized it would be interpreted that way, but... in 140 chars, I'm not that good.

New to twitter? @ seen by *only* subset of your followers who ALSO follow person you reply to. Prefix w/ "*" will cc ALL your followers

@ We need a typology-of-talks to make finer-grained distinctions between talks-that-have-audiences, based on goal, format, content

@ ...and that's the point: there ARE differences between discussions *in parallel* vs. discussions *about*. Worth experimenting :)
