@ Googlebot is generally fine with 5 redirects, but seriously, if you know it's 5 redirects, make it 1 instead :-).

@ In Chrome: Ctrl-Shift-I + Resources. I think timeline & profiling is unique to Chrome. Pick the best tool for the job :-)

@ I'm not sure if Webmaster Tools has a warning for that, Googlebot can crawl them fine in most cases.

@ Every redirect is a trip to the server (+DNS, if a different host/domain), so if you can use a single one, it's always better.

@ 301s to 301s are ok. HTTP 1.0 has a limit of 5 chained redirects IIRC (which is a lot). It's just slower.. What's the problem?
