  1. The city Citizen stepped out into was different from the city he'd known. People used to be beautiful, he thought. Now they're well groomed.
  2. Citizen exited the car smoothly, a videotape playing in reverse, and felt the sun rising behind him. Or was that the sun setting backwards?
  3. A smell clambered up into Citizen's awareness: the metallic, bitter-almond smell of dreaming. It was time to get out of the car.
  4. Through the tinted windows the city was not doing anything of note. Its indifference was impressive however. Citizen panted respectfully.
  5. Catching sight of himself in the rearview, Citizen saw that he, himself, also looked vaguely doglike. The fact didn't disturb him at all.
  6. The interior of the car gave off a hum that could only be described as extraterrestrial. CarService planet, Citizen thought. I like it here.
  7. To Citizen's amazement, the Shitsu pulled over. A subtly man-like Shitsu, or possibly a Shitsu-like man. He opened the door and got in.
  8. A limo passed Citizen just then, to all appearances being driven by a Shiitsu. At least his tour of radioland was over. He flagged it down.
  9. Citizen had always hated the steady I-V drip of prechewed entertainment he was attached to, and NPR was no exception. It made his eyes itch.
  10. Just then, Terry Gross 2.0 walked past him, smoking an invisible cigarillo. Citizen shivered. Why couldn't it at least be Click & Clack?
  11. I'm doomed to exist in a world full of avatars, Citizen thought. I can accept that. But do they ALL have to have been culled from NPR?
  12. The street was full of a.m. commuters now. Citizen looked around and made a bone-chilling discovery. Everyone looked like Garrison Keillor.
  13. Come to think of it, the cop bore a queasy resemblance to Garrison Keillor. Same varicose, squash-headed look, like a cro-magnon fetus.
  14. Is there anything worse than indifference? Citizen asked himself. Dreamcatchers, maybe. The Eddie Bauer catalog. A Prairie Home Companion.
  15. The cop's worst seemed to involve ignoring Citizen completely. The silent treatment. Citizen clenched his jaw and resolved not to crack.
  16. I'll have you know, Citizen said to the cop, that I'm aware of my rights as a taxpayer. Profoundly aware of them. Do your worst, Little Man.
  17. This policeman didn't look to be waiting for something decisive. This policeman made a proactive impression. This policeman looked pissed.
  18. Just then a policeman materialized, like a mushroom after a rain. Citizen's decisiveness was impaired by this. He shut his eyes tight.
  19. I'll give them something decisive, Citizen thought. I'll immolate myself. I'll start the next Great Fire. Where the fuck are my matches.
  20. They were waiting for something decisive, Citizen realized. Some clear-cut, gloves off, simple ultraviolent event. He wished them luck.
