jingletown

  1. There's still time to celebrate Hello Kitty's birthday, you know.
  2. Back to the Bay: warm air, full moon, sirens, a sea of self-absorption. My neighbours' band plays on.
  3. State Route 119, Dustin Acres: sure bloody is.
  4. The oddness of listening to the polite tweeness of A Prairie Home Companion on Tupman Rd surrounded by hard valley dust and rusted crosses.
  5. North of The River, North Chester, bikers, choppers, tat shops, car shows, boarded-up shopfronts, bad bars; a glinty sort of muscle-flexing.
  6. Defeated by landscape: China Grade Loop, moving linearly through landscapes of cyclic movement; I'll never get this on video this time.
  7. @cemetweet Bakersfield? I had no idea... I'm stuck doing video and photo stuff so no time to do what I want, unfortunately :-)
  8. Midday, downtown Bakersfield, the only places even half alive are tattoo parlors, bars, liquor stores; there's no here here.
  9. Outside: Birther billboards, Buck Owens Blvd, Crystal Palace, Chester Avenue, the Stockdale Highway; inside, a vast room in an empty motel.
  10. Taft: nodding donkey pumpjacks, cinderblock iglesias, barren hills and eroded canyons, dead trucks in front yards; I get lost on Hill Road.
  11. Highway 33, that classic Westside two-lane blacktop: drifting sand, cotton fields, orchards, desert oilfields, sharp hills, hazy horizons.
  12. Coaling Station A: wilted palms, cheap motels, clapboard houses, junk food and liquor stores; a thin cat watches me tweet from the shadows.
  13. I-5 south, busy river of sound in a sea of sprawl. Mesmerising.
  14. First Rain: a truck overturns in front of my studio, traffic grinds to a halt. Three crows splash about the puddles on Diesel Street.
  15. Home to The Usual, the noise, the pollution, the hipsters, the jumble of lifestyle lofts and junk-strewn streets that is Arty Jingletown...
  16. I-5 south, a dozen open-top onion trucks in loose convoy through the heat, trailing swirls of onion skins and the sharp smell of onion...
  17. Redding, CA: Calatrava's Sundial Bridge, Turtle Bay, the mighty Sacramento, the Australian Hat Outlet... what more could you want?
  18. Trinities back roads: skinny growers smoke next to pickups watching expressionlessly as I drive past. Glad I don't look like competition...
  19. East Louie Road: pines and sagebrush, volcanic debris (boulders the size of large houses), pickups carrying ATVs, logging trucks, cattle...
  20. Castle Creek Rd, Ramshorn Rd, SR-3, Gazelle Callahan Rd, this hot high beautiful bone-dry wind-bitten country...
