  1. BRONSON:There's a great movie screaming inside to get out. Lurid & shallow yet compelling subject. Hardy is incredible. Direction undermines
  2. NEWMOON: When did vamps & wwolves become sulky teen fashion models? Critic-proof emo goth romance is calculated within an inch of its life
  3. TheROAD: No Country For Anyone. Tense, moving, exhausting, monotonous. What does it mean to be a decent person in an indecent world?
  4. TheMESSENGER: Moving & emotionally harrowing portrait of the unspoken casualties of war – the families left behind. Foster & Harrelson excel
  5. COCOb4CHANEL: Bland but handsome. Tatou looks great. Inspiration & struggle are irrelevant. Who she slept with that one summer prevails. Meh
  6. ANTICHRIST: Scenes From A Marriage meets Hostel. Pretentious parable that struggles to provoke but only repulses. Defoe's penis spurts blood
  7. AnEDUCATION: Awesome cast & great writer (Nick Hornby) but never rises above good. Obvious direction, banal storyline. Mulligan = Oscar nom
  8. MEN WHO STARE@GOATS: Never have so many given so much talent for so little. Funny first 40 erodes into shapeless stupid Coen Bros imitation
  9. Disney's Xmas Carol: A tricked out CliffNotes adaptation that revels in 3D CGI bells and whistles but forgets to provide a beating heart
  10. AMELIA: Destined to disappear from a theater near you. Bland, shallow misfire about a woman who was anything but. Meh.
  11. LAILA'S B'DAY:How does a man who cherishes order live in a society ruled by chaos? A canny view at life in Ramallah that avoids pat politics
  12. GOOD HAIR: Good doc. Rock brings the funny while scholling you in the ways & means of black hair. It's better than you ever imagined.
  13. ASTROBOY: Whiz bang, snappy animation. So-so narrative. Too dark themes for the wee-ones. It'll do for a matinee.
  14. WHERE WILD THINGS ARE: More ABOUT kids than FOR kids. Childhood loneliness, imagination & anger makes for a rich inner landscape of angst
  15. A SERIOUS MAN: People suck & God is an unforgiving bastard. Coens go misanthropic black in their look at faith & modern Jewish guilt. Oy!
  16. EARTH DAYS: Too-earnest but engaging chronicle of the modern eco-movement. Surprisingly honest with eye-opening archival footage.
  17. PARANORMAL ACTIVITY: The best $11K horror flick of the decade. Best seen with an undiscerning crowd. Blair Witch got there first.
  18. ZOMBIELAND: Incredibly dumb and equally fun. Delivers most of what it promises, mostly due to a good cast. Keep the surprise cameo a secret!
  19. BURNINGPLAIN: 20 min jigsaw puzzle takes 2 hrs to finish. Writer of Babel does not equal director of Babel - Which wasn't all that anyway.
  20. TONYMANERO: Chilean sociopath wants to be John Travolta. Grim, seedy & shallow meditation on political oppression and cultural Imperialsim.
