  1. On a winter branch, a kinglet inclines his head, shows his ruby crown.
  2. Crescent moon grins pale and yellow through treetops.
  3. Leaves cling to the tree like dancers unwilling to release their partners.
  4. After the frost, the bush is a galaxy of collapsed stars.
  5. Slow white flakes drifting down silent. A folded sky.
  6. Cold, drizzly and gray, flurries in the hill country— December perfect.
  7. How fast the leaves change. Fiery hues replace green. I almost missed it.
  8. Snake at the front door. Just a rat snake, I think. Still, the paper can wait.
  9. Grackle tree-- boughs shake and chatter at the cars.
  10. Parting clouds reveal Jupiter and half the Moon, bright above my house.
  11. Cold front falls. The Killdeer scatter. A hawk dives.
  12. Waiting on the fence, autumn's first chipping sparrow-- How far he has flown.
  13. November morning— distant howling coyotes under Orion.
  14. Autumn's first gadwall, awaiting his southbound friends, swims lonely circles.
  15. Post oak savannah-- A flock of scissor-tails flies south down the Brazos.
  16. Street puddles reflect still treetops. I drive through the sky.
  17. Chemical plant flares, a fireball burns the night sky. It's never dark here.
  18. A northerly breeze-- waves flow and eddies swirl through grass that's gone to seed.
  19. When I move, the fog becomes rain. I stand still.
  20. Crisp blue fall morning. Deer turds litter the driveway. A half-eaten plant.
