  7. Authentic experience on Mumbai commuter train. Was one of way too many people jamming onto train car, partly hanging out the open door!
  8. Dharavi an eye opening experience. A lively community with problems but lots of spirit and hope apparent. Not as advertised in Slumdog.
  9. Dharavi is not just residential. $665 million in industrial revenues. Recycling, pottery, leather, food, etc. Schools. Temples. Shops. Etc.
  10. Toured Mumbai's Dharavi slum under the good care of Reality Tours. Was backdrop in Slumdog Millionare but it really is a full-on community.
  11. Victoria Terminus a hub of activity. A massive architectural gem, best relic of British control. Mumbai a great place for architecture.
  12. 1 hr boat ride on the Ararbian Sea with friend Shirish to Elephanta Island. 7C. temples carved in a series of caves. World heritage site.
  13. Fabindia: colourful store for M/W fashions using local fabrics, textiles. Grabbed some kurtas and pants for Winnipeg summer. Out-spent Gail!
  14. Halfway through Shantaram. It is an amazing story with great insights into the Indian way of life. Reading it in India is the way to go.
  15. Night stop 2: Leopold Cafe, wild boisterous 'bistro' made famous in David Gregory Roberts' novel "Shantaram". Beer served in tabletop tanks.
  16. Drinks at the Dome bar atop Hotel Intercontinental, overlooking beautiful Marine Drive and the Arabian Sea. Very chic place, prices to match
  17. First night's impressions of Mumbai: cosmopolitan, fairly clean and tidy, traffic less chaotic than Delhi.
  18. Day 3 on Hawath Beach, Kovalam. Hard to leave this beautiful beach and all that fresh seafood. But tomorrow, off to Mumbai.
  19. Value meal: pick a fresh caught red snapper, have it grilled at the restaurant, serve with rice, salad and beers for a mere $13. Serves 2.
  20. On Hawah Beach, south tip of India. Warm water, big waves, a little bit of undertow to test us stupid humans..and pineapple. Delightful day.
