  2. On December 10th, Herschel & Planck effectively "flip" in their orbits, so Herschel wil become visible to the Ground Station first.
  3. Will Herschel's potential succesor make the ESA cut? The 6 missions vying for 2 spots. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/8389906.stm

  5. 5 hours of time have been reserved with the Cebreros Ground Station for a upload of patched software and general health checks.
  6. HIFI's electronics will be allowed to warm for 24h before the detailed activities start on the evening od December 7th around 20:00UT.
  7. It is now confirmed that HIFI switch-on activities will start on December 6th with a power-on. This will take about 5 minutes.
  8. Watch out for some spectacular images after the pre-Christmas workshop.
  9. Herschel is getting up to speed in other ways too. The number of Helpdesk tickets from users per week rose nearly 20-fold in the last month.
  10. Herschel is now communicating with Cebreros Ground Station near Madrid, but New Norcia was Hershel's prime antenna for the early mission.

  12. With 11665 observations already approved by Herschel's Time Allocation Panel, we have enough to keep Herschel busy for more than a year.
  13. Every working day a batch of observations, processed and Quality Controlled, is being passed to the astronomers who have requested them.
  14. Amazing as it seems, we are now past Day 200 of the mission. Herschel is now in Operational Day 201! Things are getting increasingly routine
  15. HIFI will do a simple power on and complete health check preparatory to a resumption of observations in January.
  16. Everything is GO for a HIFI switch-on on the evening of December 7th unless there are any last minute issues.
  17. As the HIFI spectrum of Comet Garradd shows, even early in the mission it was taking some amazing data.

  19. HIFI has a further review of switch-on plans today. Unless unexpected issues are found everything should be go for a December 7th switch-on.
  20. The idea is to fit everything together from a pool of candidate observations for each day so that no time is wasted.
